Allegion honored with awards focused on environment, health and safety, as well as equity, inclusion and diversity

Allegion was honored with an award for their diversity efforts from the Indiana Chamber.

In a year full of challenges for businesses around the world, an organization’s ability to continue to thrive in its industry—and within its communities—is a strong testament of collective teamwork as well as the values and commitments of its people. At Allegion, our global team members continue to navigate the challenges of a global pandemic and additional pressures, while still being guided by “the great eight” and focusing on not just the needs of our customers, but the needs of our world and our own workplace culture.

Allegion was recently awarded with both the National Safety Council’s prestigious 2021 Robert W. Campbell Award and the first-ever Indiana Chamber Jackson Lewis Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Champion Award, allowing us to pause and celebrate recognition as a leader in environment, health and safety excellence, as well as our commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity.

National Safety Council Robert W. Campbell Award

This honor, annually given to one organization by America’s leading nonprofit safety advocate, the U.S. National Safety Council (NSC), was officially awarded to Allegion on Monday, Oct. 11, during the opening session of the 2021 NSC Safety Congress & Expo in Orlando, Florida. Campbell Award winners are an elite group of organizations successfully integrating environment, health and safety (EHS) management with business operations as a cornerstone of success.

“Allegion employees work to meticulously and intentionally uphold the company’s ‘be safe, be healthy’ value, with the goal of positively impacting workplace safety and engagement, the environment, customers and local communities. As an organization that embodies ‘being safe,’ their mission couldn’t resonate more,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC president and CEO. “We are proud to honor Allegion with this award and look forward to seeing how the company will continue to prioritize safety and make a positive impact on the world around us.”

The award recognized ways that Allegion has become the gold standard in integrating EHS management across its global business as priorities for employees, both in the workplace and beyond. Examples named by the NSC include how the Allegion team designed and implemented the “Allegion Safety Initiative,” a peer-to-peer program that has resulted in a significant reduction in workplace injuries since becoming a standalone company in 2013.  NSC additionally pointed to Allegion’s development of a tool to evaluate risk in a quantitative way, providing a framework for safety improvements, risk reduction and increased employee engagement.

“Allegion is both honored and humbled to have been selected as the winner of the 2021 Robert W. Campbell Award by the National Safety Council,” said Dave Petratis, chairman, president and CEO of Allegion, who accepted the award alongside members of our global EHS team. “At Allegion, safety is inherent to both what we do and to who we are. We pride ourselves on having one of the safest workforces in the world – but also in making positive impacts on the environment and the health of the communities around us. We hope other companies, big and small, also commit to the Campbell Award’s mission by effectively advancing business vitality through embracing the value of environmental, health and safety management.”

The selection process for this award is rigorous and required multiple rounds of submissions, spanning nearly six months throughout 2021 – and the work reflected within the application needed to showcase a long-term foundation of EHS integration in business systems. This important effort was led by dedicated members of Allegion’s global EHS team, many of whom you’ll see highlighted here in a surprise reaction video that captures their response (and our executives’ response) to hearing that Allegion would be honored with this award. Indiana Chamber Jackson Lewis Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Champion Award

Allegion was formally honored as the first-ever winner of this award on Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Indiana Chamber’s Elevate Indiana: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Best Practices for Business and Industry event. Shelley Meador, Allegion senior vice president and chief human resources officer, attended the event alongside additional company executives as well as a number of local Allegion Inclusion and Diversity Steering Committee and Inclusion Council members, to accept the inaugural award on our company’s behalf.

“I believe this recognition would be significant for any organization right now – but we are humbled and honored to be receiving it at Allegion,” said Shelley. “For our company, it serves as encouragement that the people of Allegion are making meaningful progress in our engagement, equity, inclusion and diversity journey together – while also recognizing that there’s still much more we can do.”

Since our beginning, Allegion has held fast to a set of deeply rooted values that have become a way of life for our team members across the globe. Values like: Serve others, not yourself. Do the right thing. Be empowered and accountable. Enjoy what you do and celebrate who we are. These values as well as the Allegion Leadership Behaviors have the foundation of equity, inclusion and diversity embedded into them.

“Allegion has been proactive and intentional in its (diversity, equity and inclusion or DEI) efforts, not just in the actions the company has taken, but in ensuring the organization had the right voices at the table where decisions were being made,” said Brian McDermott, managing principal of Jackson Lewis’ Indianapolis office and one of the judges of the competition. “Allegion truly has shown it is a leader in the vital DEI space.”

In 2020, with the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and others, Allegion paused to recognize that we are not experts and needed the help of those who are; there was a pressing need to understand the experiences of our employees at a deep level; and this is truly a journey, and it needs to be woven into our business operating system. In 2021, Allegion then initiated an action plan, with our initial priorities set as establishing the Allegion Inclusion Council; chartering and expanding employee resource groups; reviewing business policies, processes and practices; and launching the Allegion supplier diversity program.

“We’re pleased to recognize a company like Allegion that is voluntarily doing the right things to move society – and the business community – forward,” said Indiana Chamber President Kevin and CEO Brinegar. “We hope their commitment to having the conversations and then putting policies and programs in place will inspire others to take action.”
