On Oct. 21, Allegion’s Don Baker, vice president of global engineering, was awarded the “Richard A. Hudnut Distinguished Service Award” by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA), the leading association for North American manufacturers of commercial builders’ hardware.

BHMA is involved in standards, codes and life safety regulations and other activities that specifically impact builders’ hardware performance standards for locks, closers, exit devices and other builders’ hardware. It is the only organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain hardware performance standards.

This is the first year for the recognition. According to BHMA’s Executive Director, Ralph Vasami, “This new award was created to honor Dick Hudnut, who was responsible for setting the processes that guide the vigorous Standards Development Program that BHMA follows today. Dick was our first standards coordinator – a position he held for 30 years. His legacy to BHMA and to the builder’s hardware industry as a whole is why we created this award.”

The award is presented to individuals who have made a significant impact in the BHMA standard or code development process through outstanding dedication, competence, exceptional performance and ingenuity, as demonstrated by their lifelong contributions and achievements, their personal interactions and collaborations and their innovation and creativity. Don is one of two individuals to have received the honor. Jeff Trull, coordinator of standards at ASSA Abloy, was also awarded the recognition this year.

“The major contributions that both Don Baker and Jeff Trull have made to the quality and integrity of the BHMA standards development process led the association to award both of these longtime BHMA members this honor,” noted Vasami. “Their dedication has helped the association further its mission of advancing building safety and security.”

Tim Weller, Allegion manager of codes, standards and sustainability, nominated Don for the award based on his three decades of service to the BHMA organization. “Don has been engaged at a myriad of levels within BHMA for decades, and was instrumental in the development of many standards, as well as the advancement of the organization,” Tim commented. “Don’s impact is long-lasting. He was instrumental with the development of the first hardware product category rule (PCR), as well as the battery standard and many others,” he continued.

Don has over 30 years of experience working in the security and safety businesses at Allegion. He has held a variety of global roles within the organization, including general manager for exit devices in the U.S., vice president of the North American engineering organization, global chief engineer and, recently, general manager of the electro-mechanical business and vice president of engineering, EMEIA. In May 2020, Don repatriated to the United States, continuing in the role of vice president of engineering.

Receiving the award was a complete surprise to Don until the virtual awards reception on Oct. 21. After the ceremony, Don said, “Receiving this award means a lot to me because of the respect I have for BHMA and what they do for our industry. BHMA is probably most visible in its standards development for ANSI, as its members work to create meaningful product standards that benefit our customers. Just as important, is the work the organization does at the model building code level to ensure that special interest groups don't compromise the safe egress from buildings that have made our non-residential buildings some of the safest in the world.”

Vince Wenos, senior vice president and chief technology officer, is proud of Don’s long-term commitment to not only Allegion, but to organizations like BHMA that help to uphold the codes and standards that keep the industry safe. Vince and Tim Eckersley were on hand to congratulate Don on the award.
